What inspired you to pursue a healthcare career?:

Growing up as a Bosnian war refugee in Germany, with a family that worked in the dental health field, I was forced into a very rigorous oral hygiene routine that consisted of supervised and timed thorough brushing multiple times a day. In addition to the diligent brushing, flossing, and consistent visits to the dentist, my diet was also restricted. I was never allowed to snack on sweets. While I did not enjoy these strict dental practices as a child, and initially found it very difficult to maintain, continuously undergoing this maintenance helped build strong habits that I am now extremely thankful for. I now recognize the importance of dentistry significantly better, and the education I have gained over the past few years has transformed that appreciation into a passion and love of oral hygiene that I hope to share with others.

How did your background and history factor into your career choice?

I have always wanted to help others, and I believe that by becoming a dentist I can offer comprehensive and compassionate care to people in my community. In my native country, it can be difficult to get a higher education, especially as a woman. This has made me appreciate and understand the opportunity I have been given at Ƶ. As a mother of four, I also wanted to set an example for my daughters to follow and give them a role model to look up to by showing commitment, understanding, and compassion to others.

What about Ƶ education do you want to carry forward in your career?

I have always appreciated the holistic approach Ƶ instills in its students. This includes thoroughly reviewing the patient’s medical history and medications, as well as communicating with their other medical providers. The interdisciplinary approach allows students to better diagnose, treat, and educate the patient about all the treatment options available. By having a better understanding of a patient’s overall health, Ƶ students can provide patients with the utmost care. This approach allows for truly comprehensive care, which I want to provide for my future patients.

Why did you decide to attend Ƶ?

I always knew I wanted to become a general dentist. Not only is Ƶ’s dental program well-structured, but it also aligns with my career goals. Their clinical experience is unmatched and unique. We don’t have any residency programs, so the students can perform advanced procedures with the supervision of our specialists, who are highly supportive and experienced. I felt this gave me confidence in dealing with a variety of procedures while working alongside our specialists. I was also drawn to Ƶ due to its location since it is in a very safe area with convenient access to the city.

Anything else you would like to add?

I would like to emphasize the importance of life outside the classroom and clinic to prospective and current students. Although studying and obtaining high grades may seem highly important, one cannot be a great healthcare provider without also taking care of oneself. I highly encourage involvement with student organizations, as well as time with family and friends whenever possible.
